Scare Away Pigeons
How to Scare Away Pigeons from Balcony
There are several strategies you can consider to scare away pigeons from your balcony:
- Pigeon Repellents: There are specific pigeon repellents that you can apply in areas of the terrace where pigeons usually perch. These repellents can be in the form of gel or spray and have an odor or texture that is very unpleasant for pigeons.
- Physical Barriers: Install spikes or anti-pigeon spirals or other devices with arms that rotate in the wind on surfaces where pigeons usually perch to prevent them from doing so.
- Owls or Predator Figures: Install owl scarecrows, falcon figures or other natural pigeon predators on the terrace. These figures scare the pigeons away and keep them at bay.
- Pigeon Deterrent by Sounds: These devices emit sounds that are annoying to pigeons and keep them at a distance. The sounds are audible and might bother neighbors.
- Ultrasonics to Scare Away Pigeons: These pigeon deterrents emit high-frequency sounds, inaudible to people, which can be annoying to pigeons. At BirdGard Iberia, we only recommend them in combination with other strategies to scare away pigeons such as anti-pigeon spikes, reflective objects, pigeon repellents, or owl scarecrows. From our experience, ultrasonics alone are not effective in the long term for keeping pigeons away from the terrace.
- Reflective Objects: Place objects that reflect light, such as aluminum tapes or reflective owls. Their reflections can disorient and annoy pigeons, which deters them from approaching the terrace.
It is most advisable to combine various strategies. Implementing multiple methods simultaneously not only increases the effectiveness of pigeon control but also adapts better to different situations and behaviors of pigeons. For example, the combination of sound or visual pigeon deterrents with physical barriers like anti-pigeon spikes can be particularly effective. Or the use of pigeon repellents, along with devices that mimic the natural predators of pigeons. In addition, it is crucial to keep the terrace clean and free of food sources for pigeons, which reduces their attraction to the area.

Tips for Installing a Pigeon Repellent on the Terrace
Before installing a pigeon repellent on the terrace, it is advisable to follow some steps to ensure that the solution is effective and safe:
- Inspection and Cleaning: Check the terrace to identify where and how pigeons are accessing and using the terrace. Clean any residue left by pigeons, such as droppings or nests, using gloves and a mask to avoid health problems. Cleaning prior to the installation of the repellent is key to maximizing its effectiveness.
- Problem Identification: Determine what the main problem caused by pigeons is (for example, noise, dirt, damage to property) to select the most suitable control method.
- Research Options: Research the different types of pigeon deterrents available and choose those that suit your needs and the environment of your terrace. Consider factors such as the size of the terrace and proximity to neighbors. Remember that combining several methods is usually more effective than using just one.
- Regular Maintenance: Once the repellent is installed, carry out regular monitoring to ensure it remains effective.
- Remember that prevention is key. Keeping the terrace clean and free of food sources for pigeons will help reduce their presence.
