Description

The Dormouse Shelter – Econex has been specially designed to provide a safe refuge and breeding space for species such as the edible dormouse (Glis glis) and the garden dormouse (Eliomys quercinus). This nest box effectively compensates for the lack of natural tree cavities in forest ecosystems, helping to support the stability and continuity of these species.

Installing dormouse shelters contributes to ecosystem balance, as these small mammals play a beneficial role in the natural control of harmful insects. This makes the product ideal for conservation projects as well as forest and natural environments.

It is made entirely from solid pine wood with a thickness of 2 cm, certified by PEFC and FSC, ensuring that the wood comes from sustainably and responsibly managed forests. To guarantee durability outdoors, it features a single-component translucent wood stain in a honey hazelnut colour, protecting it from weather exposure.

The nest box design includes a practical front opening door, allowing easy maintenance and cleaning. The rear circular entrance hole of 4 cm enables safe access from the tree trunk while keeping the interior protected.

Period of use

Dormice usually reproduce twice a year. The first breeding period occurs in June, a few weeks after emerging from winter dormancy. The second extends from July to September, ending in October just before hibernation begins.

The hibernation period lasts approximately six months, from autumn to spring, making the nest box particularly useful as a breeding and resting place during active months.

Installation

For proper installation of the dormouse nest box, it is recommended to place it at a height of 2.5 to 3 metres above ground level.

Recommended location

  • Install it on the trunk of a large tree, positioning the entrance hole side in direct contact with the trunk.
  • Avoid direct sunlight and prevailing winds.
  • Leave a small gap between the nest box and the trunk to allow access from below.
  • Choose a quiet location, out of reach of cats and people.

Installation recommendations

  • To prevent damage to trees, it is recommended to hang the nest box using the supplied metal hook.
  • If installed on a wall, it is preferable to place it among climbing plants or vegetation that provide additional protection.

Maintenance

Once the nest box has been abandoned, it is recommended to empty its contents and clean the interior with boiling water to eliminate any parasites that could affect offspring in the next season.

Important: Do not handle or open the nest box during occupation.
